Terrain
for Trains

Joe Scavo of Brea, California, wanted
to build a
model train layout for his father; he wanted it to be a relatively
effortless task and when finished, to run trouble free. He chose
our High Sierra and Kato Unitrack. As can be seen in the photo,
Joe altered the track plan, eliminating the front passing siding
and five switches. His scenery work is outstanding with dozens
of trees, lots of bushes and lush grassy ground cover. Even though
Joe used two Kato truss bridges, they look quite different thanks
to the two colors.

His use of bushes and foliage under the bridge at the rear is
a great example of how to hide the foundation steps for the timber
trestle. All the buildings are "out-of-the-box" ready
to use types from Bachmann, Model Power and Life Like. The layout
is also enhanced by the many cars, trucks and people that have
been given homes and jobs here.

The family residing at the farm house has a game of Croquet under way in the side yard, while patrons of the Railroad Hotel look on from the second floor walkway. Notice the realistic use of ground cover, road paving, and Woodland Scenics trees.

The details on Joe's layout even extend to the pond where he used
Envirotech 2-part epoxy for the water, adding fallen logs and
limbs along the shore and in the water. Have you spotted the fisherman
sitting on a fallen tree on the shore? Additional rocks (Woodland
Scenics Talus) have been added at the base of the mountain, creating
a very realistic scene.
